ElevenLabs AI Receptionist: How ElevenAgents Works for Small Businesses
Missing a phone call can mean missing a customer. ElevenAgents can be configured as an AI receptionist that talks to callers, answers common questions using your business information and handles conversations when you cannot pick up.

What is an ElevenLabs AI receptionist?
ElevenAgents is ElevenLabs' platform for conversational AI agents. Instead of simply turning text into speech, an agent can listen to a caller, understand what they are asking, respond using a selected AI voice and follow instructions you give it.
For a small business, that means you can configure an agent to act like a virtual receptionist. ElevenLabs specifically positions its technology for answering calls, handling enquiries, capturing leads and supporting appointment booking. Its dedicated Reception product also runs on ElevenAgents.
This is different from a traditional recorded phone menu. The caller can speak naturally rather than pressing a sequence of numbers, while the agent follows the behaviour, business knowledge and workflow you configure.
What could it do for a small business?
A useful receptionist does not need to do everything. It needs to handle the repetitive calls that otherwise interrupt you or go unanswered.
Possible users include tradespeople, consultants, salons, estate agents, service businesses and other small companies where an incoming phone call may be a new customer.
How does ElevenAgents know about your business?
The Knowledge Base is one of the most useful parts of ElevenAgents. You can give an agent information that is specific to your company instead of expecting the underlying AI model to know it.
ElevenLabs currently supports knowledge from text, webpages and uploaded files including PDF, DOCX, TXT, Markdown, HTML and EPUB. A business could use this for opening hours, services, FAQs, product information or policies. ElevenLabs recommends keeping the information clear, relevant and up to date.
That matters because the goal is not to create an AI that improvises your business rules. It is to give the agent reliable material to draw from when somebody asks a question.
How do you create an ElevenAgents receptionist?
ElevenLabs' current quickstart says a first conversational agent can be built from the web dashboard without coding. The basic process is straightforward:
- Create or sign in to an ElevenLabs account.
- Create a new agent in the ElevenAgents dashboard.
- Write the first message callers should hear.
- Give the agent a system prompt describing its job, behaviour and boundaries.
- Add relevant business information to its Knowledge Base.
- Choose a voice.
- Test conversations and review the results before relying on it with real customers.
ElevenLabs also provides a visual Workflow Builder for more controlled, branching conversations. That can be useful when different callers need different paths, handoffs or actions rather than one broad prompt.
A simple receptionist prompt might cover
Role: You are the receptionist for [Business Name].
Job: Greet callers, answer questions using the supplied business information and collect the caller's name, contact details and reason for calling when appropriate.
Boundaries: Do not invent prices, availability or policies. If the answer is not in the business information, explain that a member of the team will need to help.
Tone: Friendly, concise and professional.
That is only a starting point. You should adapt the instructions to the business and test edge cases before putting an agent in front of customers.
Can it actually answer phone calls?
Yes. ElevenAgents can be deployed across telephony as well as web and mobile experiences. ElevenLabs also offers Reception by ElevenAgents, which packages the technology specifically as an AI receptionist with phone, chat and booking features.
If you are experimenting, you can first test an agent inside the ElevenLabs dashboard. That is a sensible way to hear how it responds before connecting it to a real customer-facing setup.
How much does ElevenAgents cost?
As checked on 13 September 2026, ElevenLabs lists its ElevenAgents Free plan at $0 per month with 15 included call minutes, four concurrent calls, Workflow Builder, Knowledge Base, multilingual support and a widget.
Starter is currently $6 per month and lists 75 included call minutes, six concurrent calls, text messages and a commercial licence. Creator is $22 per month, currently $11 for the first month, with 275 included call minutes. Higher tiers increase included minutes and concurrency.
There are extra costs to understand before deploying at scale. ElevenLabs currently lists additional hosted call minutes at $0.08 per minute, while LLM usage and telephony-provider costs can be charged separately. Prices exclude taxes, levies and duties.
For the wider ElevenLabs subscription options, see my ElevenLabs pricing guide. Always check the current ElevenLabs pricing page before choosing a plan because prices and allowances can change.
Free vs paid: where should you start?
I would start on Free. Fifteen included call minutes is not enough for a live busy business, but it is useful for testing whether the agent understands your FAQs, follows instructions and sounds appropriate.
Do not pay simply because the demo sounds impressive. Build a small receptionist, give it real questions customers ask, deliberately ask questions it should not answer and see how it behaves. Only then decide whether the paid usage makes sense.
What I like about the idea
The strongest part of ElevenAgents for a small business is that the agent can combine conversation with business-specific knowledge. The visual Workflow Builder also gives businesses a way to define more controlled conversation paths without building the whole system from code.
ElevenLabs' quickstart puts significant emphasis on testing, evaluation criteria and reviewing conversation history. I think that is important. A receptionist represents your business, so this should be treated as a system to configure and monitor rather than a switch you turn on and forget.
What should you be careful about?
An AI receptionist can still misunderstand a caller or produce an unsuitable response. Do not give it freedom to invent prices, make promises or answer sensitive questions that should go to a person.
You should also consider privacy and data-protection obligations before processing real customer calls, recordings, transcripts or personal information. The exact requirements depend on how you configure and use the service. For a UK business, that means checking your data-protection responsibilities and making callers aware of relevant processing where required.
Finally, remember the advertised subscription price is not necessarily your complete running cost. LLM and telephony charges can sit on top of ElevenAgents call usage.
Is ElevenLabs AI receptionist worth trying?
Mike Says verdict
Yes — as a free test. If calls matter to your business, this is one of the more practical uses of voice AI. The combination of natural conversation, your own knowledge base and visual workflows could take repetitive calls away from a small team.
I would not put it straight onto a live business number. Start with the Free allowance, build a narrow receptionist, test it hard and only expand its responsibilities when you trust the results.
