Yes, for most people who need realistic AI voices. ElevenLabs has a free plan, so you can judge the voices with your own text before paying. Starter at $6 a month is the first plan with a commercial licence. Skip it if you only need occasional, basic text-to-speech.

What I actually tested
I created a free ElevenLabs account and used Text to Speech rather than relying only on product claims.
First, I generated straightforward narration with a default voice. It sounded realistic to me and the process was very easy to work out without instructions.
I then tried different default voices with the same text. They were clearly different in style, but the ones I tested all sounded good.
Finally, I used more conversational wording designed to expose robotic delivery. That still sounded natural to me.
Important: I tested a small selection, not every voice or model. ElevenLabs says generation is non-deterministic, so outputs can vary.
What ElevenLabs does
ElevenLabs is an AI audio platform. The main tools are:
Text to Speech. Paste text, pick a voice and generate audio. The newest model is Eleven v4, launched on 28 September 2026. ElevenLabs calls it its most emotive model yet. It supports Audio Tags such as [angry] or [laughing] to direct delivery, and more than 90 languages. Eleven v4 Turbo is a faster version for real-time use, with a median inference latency of about 100 ms.
Voice cloning. Instant Voice Cloning (from Starter) builds a voice from a short sample. Professional Voice Cloning (from Creator) trains a closer copy. ElevenLabs says the bare minimum is 30 minutes of clean audio, and recommends 2–3 hours for the best result. You can only make a Professional Voice Clone of your own voice, and you must pass a verification step. ElevenLabs says Eleven v4 supports Professional Voice Clones. Dubbing. Automatic Dubbing translates video or audio across 90+ languages and keeps the original background audio. Dubbing Studio (from Starter) gives you more editing control, but ElevenLabs says it is now in maintenance mode and only gets critical bug fixes. Read the ElevenLabs Dubbing v2 review.
Studio. A long-form editor for audiobooks, podcasts and voiceovers. See ElevenCreative and Studio 4.0. Free includes 3 Studio projects. Starter includes 20.
Agents (ElevenAgents). Build voice agents for things like customer support or phone calls. See ElevenLabs Reception, its AI receptionist. Eleven v4 Turbo is designed for this. Agents are billed by call minutes, not from the shared credit pool. Each plan includes some minutes: 15 on Free, 75 on Starter, 275 on Creator, 1,238 on Pro, 3,738 on Scale and 12,375 on Business. Extra minutes cost $0.08 each. Voice calls are charged on connection time, with a 95% discount for silences longer than 10 seconds. The cost of the underlying AI language model is charged separately.

How credits work
- Credits are shared across every product.
- Text to Speech uses about 1 credit per character. The exact cost depends on the model.
- Dubbing uses 2,000 to 10,000 credits per minute, depending on the type and whether it has a watermark.
- Unused credits on paid plans roll over for up to two months. Free credits do not roll over.
- Annual billing costs 10 months' worth of fees, so you get two months free.
