ElevenLabs voice cloning comes in two versions. Instant Voice Cloning is the fast, low-cost choice for creators and tests. Professional Voice Cloning needs much more clean audio but aims for a closer, more consistent copy suited to long-form and commercial production.

What is ElevenLabs voice cloning?
Voice cloning creates a digital model from recorded speech. You upload or record an audio sample, ElevenLabs analyses traits such as tone, accent, pitch and rhythm, then the clone reads new text through text to speech.
The service supports multilingual output. ElevenLabs' pricing comparison lists 32 cloning languages. Results can still change by language, model, recording quality and settings.
Voice cloning is different from Voice Design. Voice Design creates a new synthetic voice from a description. Voice cloning tries to reproduce a specific real voice and therefore carries stricter consent and verification rules.
How Instant Voice Cloning works
Instant Voice Cloning, often shortened to IVC, builds a clone from a short recording. Each file must be at least 5 seconds, with at least 10 seconds in total. It does not train a dedicated model for hours. It analyses the supplied sample and produces a usable voice within seconds. That makes it the sensible first choice for testing, short voiceovers, corrections and projects where speed matters more than a near-perfect copy.

Instant Voice Cloning limitations
The clone reflects the recording you provide. Background noise, room echo, changing distance from the microphone or several speakers can reduce quality. A short sample may also miss the quieter, louder or more emotional parts of your delivery.
Instant cloning can sound convincing, but it may not hold the same identity and delivery across a long audiobook, game or repeated campaign. That is the point where Professional Voice Cloning becomes more relevant.
How Professional Voice Cloning works

The training data needs one speaker and consistent recording conditions. Thirty good minutes can be more useful than hours containing echo, background music, other voices or large changes in microphone quality.
Professional Voice Cloning aims to capture finer details, including intonation and emotion. It takes more preparation and is intended for a verified voice. ElevenLabs includes one Professional Voice Clone on Creator and Pro, with higher numbers on business plans.
Professional Voice Cloning suits:
- Audiobooks and long-form narration.
- Regular branded voiceovers.
- Games with large amounts of dialogue.
- Multilingual content using one recognised voice.
- Projects where consistency matters across many sessions.
Instant vs Professional: which do you need?
Choose Instant when you can record a short sample and a close-enough voice is fine. It is on Starter.
Choose Professional when one verified voice has to stay consistent across a longer project. It starts on Creator, and it needs much more clean audio.
Starter is the value choice for most beginners. It adds Instant Voice Cloning, a commercial licence and 30,000 credits without a large monthly commitment.
Creator is the first plan to consider for professional cloning. The step up buys the dedicated cloning option and a larger monthly credit pool. Do not choose it only because the word “professional” sounds better. Start there when the closer match will improve a real project.
How to get a better voice clone
- Record one speaker only. Remove background voices, music and television audio.
- Use one recording setup. Keep the same microphone, room and distance.
- Reduce echo and noise. A quiet furnished room often works better than a large empty space.
- Speak naturally. Give the sample the pace and delivery you want the clone to copy.
- Include useful variation. For a professional dataset, cover natural changes in emphasis and emotion without acting inconsistently.
- Check every file. Remove mistakes, clipping, long silences and audio from another speaker.
Consent, verification and commercial use
You should only clone a voice when you have explicit permission from its owner. ElevenLabs says voice cloning includes verification and safeguards intended to prevent misuse. Professional Voice Cloning is designed around verification of your own voice.
Do not use a voice clone for impersonation, fraud or misleading content. Public figures, actors, employees and clients may also have contractual, privacy and personality rights attached to their voices.
For commercial work, Starter is the first plan that includes a commercial licence. That does not give you rights to another person's voice, script, music or other input. You still need permission for everything you supply.
Which option should you choose?
Start with Instant Voice Cloning if this is your first attempt, you need short-form narration, or you are still checking if cloned speech suits your project. The $6 Starter plan is a smaller commitment and gives you commercial rights under the plan terms.
Move to Professional Voice Cloning when you have clean training audio and can explain why a closer match matters. Good reasons include a long audiobook, regular branded narration or a multilingual production that must keep one voice consistent.
